Dear Findra: My Moustache Has Ambitions
A reader’s upper lip wants a career of its own. Our agony aunt explains how characters get famous, and why the moustache cannot do it alone.
Fiction · By Findra Staff ·
Dear Findra, my moustache has started making plans without me. Last Tuesday it booked a photographer. On Thursday it asked for an account of its own. It says it has “a look” and “a rival in mind.” I am a man of modest ambition who enjoys soup. How do I tell my moustache it is not ready for fame? Signed, Overshadowed on Upper Lip Lane
Dear Overshadowed, we have bad news and good news. The bad news: your moustache is right. The good news: it cannot do this without you. Every character worth following has three things, and a moustache can only supply one of them.
One signature move
The characters people remember can be described in a single breath. A person who tips their hat at every doorway. A person who hums in every lift. Pick one move and do it everywhere, in every clip, until strangers do it back to you in the street. Your moustache will want a second move. Be firm.
The look is the logo. Change it and nobody knows it is you.
One look, worn every time
A bob. A curled moustache. A suit in a colour nobody else would choose. The look is the logo, so it never changes: no trims, no rebrands, no mysterious second moustache appearing in the comments. A triple moustache is a different career entirely, and we do not advise it on a first attempt.
Settings that come back
Give your audience somewhere to recognise. A cafe. A park bench. A bridge at dusk. Go back to them. Followers love a regular haunt almost as much as a regular face, and your moustache photographs beautifully against an espresso.
And the rival?
Let it wait. A rival is a storyline, and storylines need an audience first. Build the act, and the challengers will come to you. When one does, answer the way the greats do: in silence, with excellent posture. Yours in grooming, Findra.
This piece is fiction: a satire written by Findra. The letter and its writer are invented, and nothing here is a claim about a real person.
